Repair or replace the garbage disposal?
A jammed disposal can often be freed and reset. A disposal that leaks from its body, has rusted through, or keeps tripping usually needs replacing. We’ll tell you which, and the price, before we start.
Safety first: switch the disposal off at the wall before looking inside, and never reach into it with your hand.
Grease: the clog you build slowly
Hot grease goes down as a liquid and sets in the pipe as it cools. Coffee grounds, rice, pasta, eggshells and fibrous peels stick to it. Over months the line narrows until it closes.
Wipe greasy pans into the trash, run cold water with the disposal, and feed it small amounts. If the clog is past the sink, hydro-jetting for grease buildup scours the line clean. Bathroom drains slow too? See shower and tub drains.

Kitchen sink and garbage disposal questions
Why does my kitchen sink keep clogging?
Usually grease and food building up in the line. If it returns soon after clearing, the buildup is deeper in the pipe and may need hydro-jetting.
Is it okay to pour grease down the drain with hot water?
No. Hot water only carries the grease further down, where it cools and sets. Wipe it into the trash instead.
My disposal hums but doesn’t spin. What’s wrong?
It’s usually jammed. Switch it off at the wall and call us. Don’t put your hand inside.
Do you replace garbage disposals?
Yes. If yours can’t be repaired, we remove it and install a new one.
Should I use chemical drain cleaner?
No, especially with a disposal. Chemicals can damage the disposal and older pipes, and the caustic water makes the job riskier to clear.
